I spent last weekend in full scout uniform, singing songs, and playing games. The weird thing was: I was not with my son or any other kids. I was attending Wood Badge. What is Wood Badge? Unless you are an avid adult Scouter, you probably do not know what Wood Badge is.
Wood Badge in its simplest form is an advanced scout leadership training course. I’ve heard it called “Scout Leader Bootcamp” and “a PhD in Scouting.” So far, it is all that and more. This was part one of a course that is split into two three day weekends. The hardest part for me is being away from my family. I have young kids at home and although you might think being away from them for a few days would be nice, trust me, it is nicer to be home with them.
The best way to describe the initial weekend is intense. It is obvious there has been a lot of money and recourses put into the design of this course, and ultimately this experience will leave me a better person. Part 2 will come up in a few weeks and I will give a better assessment then. Until then, work continues on the new Cub Scout Pack.
